The Tactile Soul / Book Making

by on March 17, 2009

If you asked me what my absolute favorite thing to do creatively is, I would tell you, with no doubt, that it is creating my books! I’ve always kept journals, travel logs, inspiration books, and poetry and writing books over the years, but it was in 2001, that I started to combine all those elements together into one book. At the time, I was moving into a new chapter of my life, which included needing to condense all of my possessions.

Because I had to deal with loads of art laying around all over the studio; collage materials, scraps, drawings, writings, old canvases, every last stray bit lying around, one day the thought of just using it for my books came about, and all of a sudden – just like that – I found myself in the middle of a wonderful mess and a fever of creativity making these new books!

With only a few weeks left in that studio I had no time for insecurities like ‘Does this look good there? Does that look good here?’  I was tearing-up, painting, gluing, drawing, and writing down what was happening inside of me and what I was experiencing at the time.  I literally poured all my guts out into the three books I made.  Because I was rushed it meant I had to trust myself even more and I loved that rush. No word can ever describe creatively how I felt then when my whole world shifted and out of the most trying and challenging time I found myself reborn and able to reach incredible heightened levels of awareness.

As usual, what was overwhelming at first became incredibly powerful! AHHH! What fine medicine! It detoxified, freed and cleansed my soul. Making the decision of what possessions are important enough to keep lugging around with you all your life is so hard but when I got through it and did a lot of detaching I felt incredibly empowered and light.

I think of my Books as auto-biographical visual montages.  I put so much of me into them – completely unedited. When creating my books I am writing my story from this life in images and officially tagging my existence, celebrating all of which is my life!
I value and hold sacred the book making medium. Ceremoniously I approach it; it is the medium and the vehicle by which I feel the freest and the most spontaneous in.  I’m dancing along from page to page spinning out all of what’s there inside my head, tapping into the deep, and stirring up my imagination-And so it is!  Life is electric and I’m forever grateful.
