Colin Menzies is a Canadian artist who creates illustration, music, animation, photography, fashion, and dance under the alias of The Subliminal Rabbit. His illustrative work has been published in Europe and shown in New York and Tokyo. The one thread in this vision has been the image of a rabbit hiding in every piece created, thus the name “Subliminal Rabbit“. Colin has recently released a dance music album as The Subliminal Rabbit that was circulated by DJ’s and received radio play.
A friend, an amazing human being and gifted artist, Colin has never ceased to inspire me since the day we met. His vibe is so positive and electric with a current that runs in such pure honest devotion towards art and expression you feel at once this huge gratefulness that you know him. With any of his creations, whether it is a song, a painting, or videos of his animation, they draw you in and take you on a kind of fantastical journey wonderfully awakening all the senses.
I love his imagination, it is courageous and seems to flow effortlessly out of him. The best was when we would draw together in NYC and I’d glance over and see just how intensely absorbed he was. I’d witness this line of his just eloquently dancing all over the page composing the most beautiful creatures and figures who seemed to be quite enjoying their festive self’s.
We met in NYC a couple of years ago on my block and just knew right away a really cool connection was made. Soon after he moved back to Canada we vowed to always keep in touch with each other and we have. I thank him always for not only being the greatest friend but the creative comrade he is to me. Over the years we’ve shared and helped each other with personal struggles with our art, discussed many of ideas, answered questions together, and have celebrated our accomplishments together.
Way back when I first learned he was going to work with autistic children doing art therapy I just thought how great he’d be at that and how lucky any kid would be to have him as a teacher. Later when I saw one of the projects he completed with them, a giant mural in Calgary, I was just amazed! Watch out for this Canadian he’s bound for glory!
When we last touched base he was in Nicaragua being over stimulated by that incredible part of the earth. I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see what will creatively be unleashed after his return!
